Wind Surfing is also very popular on Hatteras Island. It can also be done on both the waves of the ocean or the smooth, calm waters of the sound.

Surf’s up! Hatteras Island is an East Coast hot spot for surfing! The perfect wave is here! Die hard surfers are drawn here in search of it. This is also a great place to learn how to surf. There are lessons available that are taught by expert surfers.

The SEAcret Treasure top pick for all things surfing is the Rodanthe Surf Shop just a short walk from the cottage. This cool shop was established in 1989 and is a classic surf shop. They sell custom Hatteras Glass Surfboards. These Hatteras Glass Surfboards are locally hand crafted and sold here exclusively. They also do board repairs. This is a family run business offering a wide variety of surfing clothes and their own original logo T-shirts and sweatshirts. They rent surfboards, body boards and paddle boards. Lessons are also available here. This is a must see shop for those that love surfing and Rodanthe.
Hatteras Island Boardsports, located in Avon provides excellent group, semi-private and private surfing lessons. They have rental equipment.
Skimboarding
This sport is like surfing only the action is close to the shoreline. This is a board sport using a skimboard, which allows you to glide over the surface of the water and out to the breaking wave to ride it back to the shore. It is also fun to just glide along the water on the shoreline. Skimboarding is another very popular water sport here and can be done even when the waves are barely breaking. Lots of tricks to learn once you master the basics.
